I was in Indy assisting my mother-in-law with her booth at the Indiana State Fair in the Indiana State Museum in February of 2009. She creates hand made silver, brass, and copper jewelry that is really quite unique. Her website is Nancy Aires Jewelry. Besides helping her set up her booth and get the jewelry prepared, and reading a couple of books on Google Adwords which I'll be imploring for my creative solutions company, I had the opportunity to go out for a few hours and walk downtown with my camera.
This work brings me back to what I really love doing: simply walking around and photographing. Letting go of heady topics to move down whatever street pulls me, I love to photograph the decay and the subtle ironies of cities. Hopefully this small body of work says a little something about the city, the people (even in their absence), and the mood. Lately I have become re-interested in photographing forms and capturing colors that are purely about line and tone. For me, the photographs that stand out in this series are Eight Thirty Six and Red Rusted Roof. In their abstraction, I believe that these two images capture everything I would ever want to say about a place.
