Phoenix, Arizona 2005

Before this 4000 mile road trip, I had never ventured further west than Wyoming.  Going out west for the first time was an eye opening experience that sparked the fire for my thirst to travel.  In just four short days, my father, his wife, and Meaghan and I drove from Bloomington to Phoenix and back.  Our trip was purposeful, yet yielded very little time to explore.  We did, however, have the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon - but only for a very short time.  In this series, I wanted to focus on the negative space of the western landscape - the void of the cloudless sky.  And to further showcase the absence of humanity, I thought there was no better subject than the gas stations and rest stops that are nothing more than fleeting thoughts in our minds.
